A Field of Voices

hymns for worship

by James E. Clemens and David Wright

When you open the pages of this book of 30 hymns, you are likely to find something that expresses the longings and desires of your soul this day. From joy to sorrow, from  closeness to abandonment, from wholeness to pain, from God to individual, the human experience is well-traversed.

—Ken Nafziger, from the Foreword

As I look through these new contributions to hymnody, I’m struck by the amount and quality of intelligence at work here. Yes, there is artistic ability aplenty in both poet and composer, but also a very human sensitivity to phrase, moment, action. These songs connect to our daily life: “Grace [is] as near as a neighbor’s hand.” The music ranges from folk to chorale to gospel, with memorable, singable melodies. There are easy two-part settings and rounds, as well as swinging rhythmic anthems and lovely, quiet prayers. Many congregations will be delighted with this collection: I know mine will want it!

Alice Parker, composer and author of The Anatomy of Melody and Melodious Accord: Good Singing in Church

Most every time I am asked to look at some new collection of worship music, I cringe and put it off as long as I can. Either the songs don't sing easily, or the theology is spineless. To my great delight, this collection has been a light in the darkness. It is packed with devotion, longing, admonition, prayer, rhythm, dancing, reveling, yearning, community, praise. And the songs represent a variety of styles as well. It is worth the learning of these songs, for I believe any congregation will find them a source of delight for a long time to come.

—Ken Medema, composer and performer

This attractive collection presents congregational hymns in a wide variety of settings. The collaborative approach Clemens and Wright describe in their introduction brings a lucid quality to the songs. The poetry and music work together to create a pace that allows congregations to think as well as feel while they sing. A Field of Voices has a fine potential for enriching the worship life of the church.
